Historical note

John Walter Rhoden was born March 13, 1916 to John Walter Rhoden, Sr. and Maime Shorter at No. 11th Avenue & Lawn in Birmingham, Alabama. Rhoden’s father was a brakeman/fireman on a railroad who died in a work related accident in Harrisburg, Mississippi. Rhoden’s siblings include a brother Tony (born Herman Santonio Rhoden, 1920 – 1991) who became a photographer in Chicago, and sisters Lillie Belle Rhoden and Myrtle Rhoden. Several other siblings have not been identified.

Rhoden attended Industrial High School in Birmingham, Alabama. During this time he was mentored by sculptor William Grant. At age 16, he executed a bust of the school’s principal, Arthur Parker, who the school was later named after.

After high school, Rhoden attended Talladega College from 1934 to 1936. There, he met Hale Woodruff, who was already an established muralist and painter. Woodruff encouraged Rhoden to visit New York where he met fellow sculptors Augusta Savage and Richmond Barthé. By 1942, Rhoden was a private enlisted in the Reserve Corps of the U.S. Army. During this time, Rhoden completed portrait busts of several high ranking members of the military, including Lieutenant General Hubert R. Harmon.

After his service, Rhoden attended the New School for Social Research and then Columbia University from 1947 to 1950 where he won the 1st Prize for Sculpture three times. Also at Columbia, Rhoden met classmate and painter, Richenda Phillips (also frequently spelled Richanda). They married in Rome, Italy in April of 1954.

After his time at Columbia, Rhoden spent a year at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine before attending the American Academy in Rome from 1951 to 1954 first on a Fulbright Fellowship and then the Prix de Rome. Rhoden was selected by the United States Department of State to serve as an art specialist from 1955 through 1959 as a part of the International Cultural Exchange and Fair Participation Act of 1956 (ambassadors were sent as early as 1954). During this service, he visited over 20 countries [including Iceland, Ireland, Finland, Norway, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Kenya, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Uganda, Tangankika (now Tanzania), Zanzibar (now Tanzania), the USSR, Poland, India, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and the Soviet Union] in an official capacity. He was one of four such specialists during his time in the Soviet Union. The other three were Lamar Dodd, Franklin C. Watkins, and William Arthur Smith.

After his time traveling with the State Department, the Rhodens returned to New York City and purchased their home at 23 Cranberry Street in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1960. Shortly thereafter, John Rhoden left for Indonesia on a Rockefeller Foundation Grant to set up a bronze foundry at the Institut Teknologi in Bandung from 1961 through 1963.

After their period of travel from the early 1950s through the early 1960s, John and Richenda Rhoden worked in New York City where they both taught and exhibited their art. During his later career, John Rhoden notably exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia. He also completed several major commissions including Zodiacal Curved Wall for the Sheraton Hotel in Philadelphia, A Happy Family is the Core of a Healthy Community or Monumental Bronze for the Harlem Hospital in New York, Monumental Abstraction for the Metropolitan Hospital in New York, Nesaika for the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Mitochondria for the Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, Frederick Douglass for Lincoln University, and Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Rhodens became active members of their community. John Rhoden worked for the New York Board of Education and taught art classes for local public schools. He and Richenda led classes and tours through their home and studio at 23 Cranberry Street.

John Rhoden died at 84 years old on January 4, 2001 in New York, NY.

Richenda Rhoden (1917-2016), born Richenda Phillips, was a Native American woman from the Cherokee and Menominee tribes. Her father, James Phillips, was a member of the Cherokee nation and was the first Native American judge in the state of Washington.

Richenda studied Anthropology at the University of Washington in Seattle. While she was a student, she met her first husband, Lawrence Kay, who she married in the early 1940s. Soon after their marriage Lawrence left to serve in WWII and tragically died on November 27, 1943. While Lawrence Kay was away Richenda moved to New York City where she became a hat model. During this time, she enrolled in Columbia University to study Asian Art, where she met John Rhoden.

Richenda was a painter, and taught painting at Stuyvesant High School in the evenings as a part of their adult programming. She was inspired by folklore and mythology. Many of her works picture Native Americans as well as animals, nature, and sacred geometry. During the 1950s and 1960s, Richenda traveled all over the world with John. While abroad, Richenda took photographs of the people she met and collected their stories.

To get to know her neighbors after the Rhodens bought their Cranberry Street home in 1960, Richenda set up a table selling crafts. This eventually turned into the Cranberry Street festival and prompted Richenda to create the Cranberry Street Association.

Richenda lived to be 99 years old. She painted almost every day and, due to limited mobility at the end of her life, she converted the freight elevator in her house into her studio. After her passing, the Soloway Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y. hosted a retrospective exhibition of Richenda’s work, curated by Emily Weiner.

Scope and Contents note

The papers of John Walter Rhoden measure 22 linear feet and date from 1920-2001, with the bulk of the material dating between 1938 and 1992. The papers reflect Rhoden’s professional life as a sculptor, teacher, and representative with the United States Department of State and his personal life with wife and artist, Richenda Rhoden. About three quarters of the collection consists of Rhoden’s professional, travel, and personal photographic materials and professional correspondence. There are also professional contracts and documents, artwork and sketchbooks, as well as personal correspondence, documents, and ephemera, belonging to both John and Richenda Rhoden.

The collection comprehensively covers John Rhoden’s time as a specialist with the United States Department of State. There is extensive planning correspondence between Rhoden, his fellow specialists (Lamar Dodd, William Arthur Smith, and Franklin Chenault Watkins), and the program representatives, Frederick A. Colwell and Harold E. Howland. There is additionally extensive black and white photography and color slides from this period of Rhoden’s life and career.

Furthermore, the middle and later portion of Rhoden’s career and education from the late 1940s through the early 1990s is very well documented in the manuscripts and photographic materials. The materials cover Rhoden’s education, exhibitions, commissions, grants/fellowships/awards, sales, professional activities, and artwork.

There is additionally comprehensive documentation about the Rhodens’ home at 23 Cranberry Street in Brooklyn, N.Y., including administrative documents, hundreds of photographs, and renovation documentation.

The Rhoden papers do not contain materials documenting Rhoden’s thoughts and ideas in this collection, with the exception of four sketchbooks that include his notes, drafts, and sketches. There are no journals and very few personal letters. There is no material from the first 20 years of Rhoden’s life, with the exception of a copy of his birth certificate, and very little material regarding Rhoden’s biological family, with the exception of ten or so photographs and around fifty slides. There is also little material from Rhoden’s early career in the 1930s and 1940s. The Rhoden papers do not include extensive materials by or about Richenda Rhoden, with the exception of photographs in which she is the subject. Finally, there is very little material from later in John Rhoden’s career and life in the mid-1990s through his death in 2001.

Series 1. Exhibitions: Materials date from 1950 to 1995 and consists of correspondence, planning documents, clippings, catalogs, and ephemera relating to Rhoden’s solo and group exhibitions both in America and abroad.

Series 2. Commissions: Materials date from 1949 to 1996 and consists of correspondence, planning documents, blueprints, and contracts relating to Rhoden’s public commissions. The series also includes materials from unrealized commissions.

Series 3. Fellowships/Grants/Awards: Materials date from 1945 to 2001 and contains correspondence relating to Rhoden’s various fellowships, grants, and awards. It additionally contains completed applications and reference letters.

Series 4. Sales records: Materials date from 1954 to 1988 and consists almost entirely of correspondence relating to Rhoden’s sales and gallery representation, mostly by Galeria Schneider, Fairweather-Hardin Gallery, and Saidenberg Gallery. It additionally includes correspondence relating to individual sales with private collectors.

Series 5. Professional Activities: Materials date from 1945-1993 and includes manuscripts relating to Rhoden’s military service, education, press, general correspondence, artist publications, societies/committees/associations, teaching, resumes, portfolio, research files, tools, and Rhoden’s studio at 23 Cranberry Street in Brooklyn, NY. The press primarily consists of loose news clippings and news clippings adhered to a scrapbook regarding John Rhoden’s travels with the U.S. Department of State. Teaching documents include correspondence, certifications, and course proposals. Rhoden studios documents include financial records, renovation project documents, and press.

Series 6. Artwork: Contains four sketchbooks and unbound sketches created between 1959 and 1988. The four sketchbooks were used during Rhoden’s travels abroad. Due to the content of the sketches, he was most likely traveling through Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea. Within the sketchbooks there are some notes pertaining to international travels and contact information. There is one folder that contains planning and instruction information. Additionally, there are mixed media sketches, documentation of art, press clippings and one print.

Series 7. Personal papers: Materials date from 1936 to 2001 and consists primarily of financial records, documents relating to Rhoden’s house 23 Cranberry Street, passports, and Richenda Rhoden’s personal records. The passports document the Rhodens’ travels for the American Academy in Rome, Department of State, and Rockefeller grant.

Richenda Rhoden’s records contain academic writings, correspondence with or relating to her first husband (1943-1945), correspondence from John Rhoden when he was traveling with the State Department, and small amounts of ephemera. The correspondence from John Rhoden is the largest amount of personal writing that the collection has. The letters are dated from October 1958 through March 1959 and are housed in seven folders. Aside from the undergraduate writings there is little written by Richenda and very few documents that contain personal information.

Series 8. Photographs: The largest series in the collection. Comprises of extensive black and white and color photographs, color slides, and film documenting Rhoden’s exhibitions, commissions, travel, professional activities, art, and personal residence and social life at 23 Cranberry St. Brooklyn, NY. A notable section of the photograph series is black and white photographs of Rhoden’s art created from 1940 to 1990. There are over 100 identified sculptures and one box of unidentified works.

Processing Information note

Processed by Kelin Baldridge & Jahna Auerbach, 2019-2020.

The John Rhoden papers had no original order. As a result, a high level of processing and arrangement was required to make the papers accessible. The arrangement is intended to maximize access for researchers. By grouping the manuscripts into naturally occurring subject categories (exhibitions, commissions, fellowships, grants, and awards, sales, professional activities, and personal), rather than by format (for example, financial documents, correspondence, contracts), the papers are self-contextualizing and discoverability is increased.

All photographic materials have been kept together as a series both physically and intellectually. The photograph series consists of the following subseries: exhibitions, commissions, travel, professional activities, art, and personal life. The decision to keep the photographs as a separate series stemmed from the overwhelming lack of labels and contextualizing information on the photographs and slides. This lack of concrete information often made it difficult to definitively categorize the subject, location, or date of the photograph. By maintaining a photographic materials series, we were able to categorize the items to the best of our ability according to our research and context clues, without having to force them into categories that could not be definitively determined.

In processing the collection, we decided to dismantle Rhoden’s portfolio carrying cases. This decision was made as it was evident that the cases were no longer arranged in the way that they were when used by Rhoden. Unrelated items were interspersed at random throughout the portfolios, including items dated after Rhoden’s death. With that said, several individual pages within the portfolios remained intact and the decision was made to leave these pages with adhered photos together as remnants of Rhoden’s portfolios.

Processing, cataloging, and digitizing of the John Rhoden papers was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
